Developed over several years with leading educationalists and designers, Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus simulates the behavior of a private tutor to provide the student with tutoring based around their unique ability. Math-Whizz guides students through a personal learning plan, assessing them continually.

Students who use Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus for 45 to 60 minutes a week see their math ages improve, on average, by 1.6 years in the first year of use.

Lessons are delivered over the internet and come in the form of interactive animations. Over 1200 animations are directly aligned to US national and state standard in math, which means learning covers all the math topics and is matched to what they will need to know in school.

Each animation covers a specific learning objective, and starts with a “teacher section” where the math concept is introduced in a visual and engaging way. This is followed by interactive animated questions where students get to answer. Rapid Recall Maths exercise

Importantly, if students don’t get the right answer, they almost always get more than just “wrong, try again”, as this doesn’t really do anything to help them grasp the concept or gain real understanding (yet this is what most content on the internet does).

Rather, something visual or textual happens to give the child a clue or that “aha!” moment. Then and only then they try again. Sometimes there may be several layers of help depending on complexity. In this way students are guided to gain understanding and confidence.

Just like a personal tutor - click to expand / collapse

There’s more to Math-Whizz than just academically powerful interactive lessons. To provide each student with one-to-one tutoring tailored to their ability, Math-Whizz is powered by an intelligent tutoring system, designed to simulate the behavior of a human tutor.

When a student first gets tutoring with a private tutor, the tutor will start by trying to find the student’s overall ability, which math topics they are confident at, and which less so. In this way the tutor can decide what to teach the student and which areas to cover first.

Similarly, when a student first logs into Math-Whizz, he or she is presented with a series of questions carefully designed to get an initial assessment of the student’s ability in several of the math topics. In this way Math-Whizz gets an initial understanding of the child’s ability and their strengths and weaknesses.

Reports

This initial assessment usually only lasts approximately 30 minutes, and at the end of that you can see the student’s math profile or “math age” report.

More confident students may find their math age is ahead of their actual age, whereas less confident students may find their math age is lower than their actual age.

Furthermore, their ability may vary across the different topics. An eight year old may find that she has a math age of 8.5 in addition, but only 7.25 in fractions. Each child really has a unique math profile. This is why it is so difficult for teachers in school to cater for every child’s individual needs – because they are all so different!

As a result many students who don’t use Math-Whizz find they are unchallenged or, worse, left behind and can lose confidence and fail to reach their potential as a result.

Tutoring constantly adapts - click to expand / collapse

Once a child has completed the initial assessment they receive interactive math lessons and practice tests based on their profile. These lessons are targeted to their ability at that time. This means they are getting just the right tutoring that they need at that stage of their development.

Students receive lessons in all the math topics but extra attention in weaker topics. In this way, over time, their math age not only improves, but they also catch up in their weaker topics, giving them a more 'rounded' math profile.

The tutor is flexible, just like a human tutor. This makes it very different to a fixed course of study that you may find at other websites.

For example, a student logs into his Whizz account, starts his tutoring and receives an animated fractions lesson, set to his ability. If he does well the tutor delivers some exam-style questions to confirm his knowledge, in the understanding that classroom tests don't have the benefit of exciting characters and graphics! The child makes the cognitive connection between what he has learned with animations and test questions of the kind he may get in school. In this way Math-Whizz prepares the child for success in school tests.

On the other hand, if the child struggles with the fractions lesson, there is no point moving him forward until this is dealt with. So, just like a human tutor might, the mathematical principles behind the fractions lesson are immediately addressed with a different animated exercise. This may be key to understanding the more complex concept - using a different, and often simpler, explanation.

That is what a good human tutor does and that is what Math-Whizz does.

Of course, the child may sometimes do only moderately well in the animated part of the lesson. In this case the virtual tutor will move onto another topic, and when the child next logs in, or a week later, it will present him with the same lesson. Sometimes all a child needs is a fresh chance, a little reinforcement, to understand the math concept.

For this reason students are sometimes presented with lessons they have done before, and this is entirely intentional. It is important that students progress only when they have fully understood the concept at hand.

The Math-Whizz tutoring system makes decisions on what to teach based on how a student is progressing, continually assessing the student’s progress, in just the way that a good private tutor would. A student can log in and make progress even when there is no parent or supervising adult. You don’t have to worry about what to teach your child next, the Math-Whizz tutor does that for you.

Why Math-Whizz over alternatives? - click to expand / collapse

Other websites may offer resources, animations, or fixed courses of study, but Math-Whizz is the only service that takes a child on a full journey, continually tailoring and adapting to their unique requirements, to reach their potential.

Does this mean that Math-Whizz replaces human teachers?

No. At the end of the day the power of a human tutor - a good one, that is - is the ability to look directly at a student and give them the attention, care and confidence that can make a great difference to a child.

But Math-Whizz can cater to a student in a way a human tutor can’t, using interactive animations that engage children, and in ways that allows a child to progress in their own time at their own pace, whilst providing measurable results and reports to parents. Students never have to worry about Math-Whizz losing patience with them! In truth, the personal electronic and human tutor approaches complement each other to give a child the best possible chance of success.

Math-Whizz means people can get one-to-one tutoring in a more affordable and accessible way than they have done in the past – at home, over the Internet, in their own time.

Recommended Usage - click to expand / collapse

Experience has shown that to get the best long term results, students should use Math-Whizz alongside their school classes (or home education plan), with a weekly routine of “little and often.”

Based on results from thousands of Math-Whizz students, our recommended use for Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus students is as follows:

  1. Underachieving students, i.e. those whose math age is behind their actual age (you will be able to see their math age in the parent report after they have completed the assessment), or students who need more time to absorb math concepts, are recommended to use Math-Whizz Tutoring Plus for 90 minutes a week. Based on the most recent data, 96% of students accelerate their math age by more than a year in 12 months' of use, with an average improvement in math age of more than 2 years.
  2. The majority of students should spend 45 to 60 minutes per week, where the average expected math age improvement over 12 months is between 1.3 and 1.6 years.
  3. Students who are gifted and talented and have math ages well beyond their actual age can be challenged with just 30 minutes of Math-Whizz usage per week.
