Multiplication: 'An operation on 2 numbers that tells how many in all.'

Fractions

We can think of multiplication as repeated addition. Students in early elementary school are taught multiplication in this way. In a multiplication question the first number is the number of sets and the second number tells how many in each set.
We might assume that multiplication always makes something larger. But this isn’t true if the number of sets is a decimal or a fraction, like ‘0.5 x 8’. We can write this as ‘half of one set of eight’, which is four.
